A Look Back: Lake George 2017

The one place we’ve been to every year since we started camping is Lake George. We have thoroughly enjoyed our stays at Adirondack Camping Village (here and here), however they close for the season after Labor Day and our trip was planned for late September. So we were forced to pick another campground in the Lake George area. I figured if we couldn’t stay at our favorite spot outside of the village, I wanted to stay somewhere closer to the village . We weren’t sure we would fit at Lake George Battleground Campground so we settled on King Phillips Campground.

We left for Lake George on Friday evening, after Carter got home from school and Chris from work. It was late when we got in, so we set up the camper, put the boys to bed, and made ourselves a fire. The first night wasn’t bad as we didn’t have any neighbors yet, but all three spots were occupied by the second night. We took these pictures Saturday morning and you can see the sites of our (soon to be) neighbors across the way. This area would definitely be great for group camping, but that’s not what we were doing, so it was a bit of a bummer. We also had close neighbors on the opposite side and behind us.

On Saturday morning, we went for a bike ride to check out the rest of the campground. Ben & Jack played in the sand, Chris and Carter played football and I read a book.

After some campground fun, we headed into Lake George for lunch. We parked the truck and walked into the village to have lunch at Boardwalk Restaurant and Marina. But guess what? It was already closed for the season! We walked around a bit trying to figure out where to eat — which can be difficult with kids and Chris’s dietary restrictions — and ended up at Lake George Beach Club. We sat outside on the deck and had a waterfront view. All I have a picture of is my drink, but it was all so good. We will definitely go back there next time!

After lunch, we let the boys burn off some steam at the playground before walking around and checking out all the shops. They each got a toy truck that say their names because when you find the same thing in everyone’s name, you buy it! And Chris and I got some Lake George tee-shirts.

On the way back to the campground, we stopped at Pirate’s Cove Adventure Golf for a game of mini golf! It wasn’t very busy which allowed us to take our time playing.

On Sunday morning, we went for a hike. We wanted to go up to Prospect Mountain but Ben & Jack weren’t ready for the trail Chris and Carter took back in 2016. So we took the path less traveled up to Prospect Mountain! We started out with our iPhone compasses and a few trail marker suggestions we found online and started walking. We stopped a few times and Chris would walk ahead and figured out which path to take at an intersection. We eventually found a trail map on an app about 3/4 through our hike and figured out we had taken one wrong turn (only one!) but easily found our way back to the correct trail. We packed a picnic lunch and ate it when we got to the top of the mountain.

Overall, it took us 5 hours to complete our 6 mile roundtrip hike. The boys did well with the hike and we went to Ben & Jerry’s for ice cream to celebrate.

On Monday morning, we went for a bike ride on the Warren County Bikeway, a paved 9.2 mile bike path that goes from Lake George to Glens Falls. We didn’t go the full length of course, but we made it a few miles. It’s hard to take pictures while you’re riding a bike, but I got one after we stopped for a snack and were about to head back to the campground.

Back at the campground, we packed up the camper and headed back home. While we didn’t love King Phillips Campground, we were able to make the best of it and had a great trip! It’s not planned yet, but I’m sure we’ll be back in the Lake George area this year!
